InfoRashida Harbi Tlaib

Rashida Tlaib is serving her first term as State Representative for the 12th House District, which encompasses Southwest Detroit.

Tlaib was raised in Southwest Detroit, the eldest of 14 children and child of immigrants, who taught her the importance of hard work, honesty and commitment to community.

Tlaib is the first in her family to earn a college degree. In 1998, she received her B.A. in Political Science from Wayne State University and her law degree from Thomas Cooley Law School in January of 2004.

Tlaib has a strong dedication to public service and community advocacy. Before joining the Michigan House of Representatives, she provided social and advocacy services to thousands of Southwest Detroit residents at Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development, the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services, the International Institute of Metro Detroit and the Neighborhood Tax Center.

In working to help these families, she advocated for public policies that improve the quality of life for families in need of better access to human services, education, and civil rights and consumer protection. Rashida has also worked on local initiatives to expand community policing, neighborhood clean-ups, and is dedicated to putting an end to fraudulent schemes that mislead residents.

She has been married to her husband, Fayez, for 10 years, and they have a beautiful son named Adam.

As State Representative, Tlaib's priorities will be:

* To work side-by-side with residents to fight corporate and special interests that negatively impact our environment and quality of life as residents in Southwest Detroit and the Great State of Michigan.
* Provide a full-service district office to offer services such as foreclosure prevention, utility bill assistance, free tax preparation, legal referrals, reporting illegal dumping and crime in our neighborhood.
* Be a strong advocate for Southwest Detroit to ensure we get our fair share of funding to improve the quality of our children’s education, promote a viable business sector and strengthen community development programs that provide for a healthier environment in Southwest Detroit.
* Protect Michigan residents from unfair and deceptive business practices that target seniors, working poor and immigrant communities.
