Info | HALL, Leonard Wood, a Representative from New York; born in Oyster Bay, Nassau County, N.Y., October 2, 1900; attended the public schools; was graduated from the law department of Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., in 1920; was admitted to the bar in 1922 and commenced practice in New York City; member of the State assembly in 1927 and 1928 and 1934-1938; sheriff of Nassau County, N.Y., 1929-1931; delegate to the Republican State conventions 1930-1958 and to the Republican National Conventions in 1948, 1952, 1956, and 1968; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-sixth Congress; reelected to the six succeeding Congresses and served from January 3, 1939, until December 31, 1952; did not seek reelection in 1952 to the Eighty-third Congress; elected surrogate of Nassau County, N.Y., in November 1952, resigning to become chairman of the Republican National Committee, serving from 1953 to 1957; President Eisenhower’s personal representative at opening of the Brussels World’s Fair in April 1958; resumed the practice of law in Garden City, N.Y., and New York City; resided in Locust Valley, N.Y.; died in Glen Cove, N.Y., June 2, 1979; interment in Memorial Cemetery of St. John’s Church, Laurel Hollow, Long Island, N.Y.
