Info | PENDLETON, George Hunt, (son of Nathanael Greene Pendleton), a Representative and a Senator from Ohio; born in Cincinnati, Ohio, July 19, 1825; attended the local schools and Cincinnati College; attended Heidelberg University, Germany; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1847 and commenced practice in Cincinnati; member, State senate 1854-1856; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1854 to the Thirty-fourth Congress; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1857-March 3, 1865); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1864 to the Thirty-ninth Congress; one of the managers appointed by the House of Representatives in 1862 to conduct the impeachment proceedings against Judge West H. Humphreys; unsuccessful Democratic candidate for vice president in 1864; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1866 to the Fortieth Congress; unsuccessful Democratic candidate for governor of Ohio in 1869; president of the Kentucky Central Railroad 1869-1879; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1879, to March 3, 1885; unsuccessful candidate for renomination; Democratic onference Chairman 1881-1885; appointed Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Germany in 1885, and served until his death in Brussels, Belgium, November 24, 1889; interment in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio.
