Info | also an expert organizer, a collaborator and a connector. Those are the qualities that he promises to bring to Augusta.
And, if you ask Justin, he’ll tell you that the words of his late grandfather are what motivate him to continue public service and make him proud to be a Mainer: “It was Maine that made me what I am, and now I want to help make the lives of Mainers better.”
Justin wants to be part of that important legacy, and he knows that he can be part of the solution to make Maine an even better place to live, work and play — living in diverse of areas of the state is a part of what inspires him.
Believe it or not, Justin is a country boy. Although spending the first few years of his life in Waterville, Justin and his family moved to rural Dexter, a community north of Bangor, when he was eight years old. Justin attended public schools in Waterville and Dexter, both traditional mill and factory towns.
Justin’s family eventually moved to Boston when he turned 16, and, although going from rural Maine to a big city was both exciting and scary, Justin always knew that he would eventually return to Maine to begin a career and raise a family in the state he loves.
Justin attended Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana after he received a golf scholarship. With a Bachelor’s degree in finance under his belt, Justin turned professional golfer, followed by jobs in Boston, Orlando, and New York City before deciding it was finally time to return to Maine in 2003.
speaker was a friend and the national director of The League of Young Voters, an organization devoted to developing new ways to educate, engage and mobilize young people around community issues, elections, and dynamic cultural events.
The seed was planted and, although knowing few people in Portland, Justin decided that launching a League chapter was the challenge he was seeking.
The success of The League over the past four years has become the envy of the national organization. Under Justin's leadership, the League was a founding partner of Opportunity Maine which resulted in a 2007 state law that expands higher educational opportunity to all Mainers. In 2006, The League passed a City of Portland ordinance that provides housing developers incentives to build affordable housing. Also in 2006, The League was a major stakeholder that guided and passed the Maine Energy Efficiency Disclosure Form.
However, the intangible results of The League are what make Justin most proud. Because of The League’s work, it is clear that young people are more involved than ever in making a difference in the community. They are influencing the decisions of elected leaders and meeting with business and social leaders to effect real change and make Portland the city that they will soon inherit.
team environment where all team members are encouraged to meet their full potential through active listening and cultivating relationships.
Justin recently stepped down from his post at The League to pursue a new adventure in real estate development. But, he knew that wouldn’t quench his thirst for helping to improve his community and the state of Maine.
Today, he continues to build relationships throughout Maine, while speaking to Portland voters about how he can earn their vote on June 10.
Justin lives in Portland's Munjoy Hill neighborhood with his partner, Rachael.
