InfoTracey Smith is a commercial real estate broker in Fort Worth who has had a lifelong interest in politics. As a college student he had a McCarthy for President bumper sticker in 1968. For many campaigns after that he worked as a news reporter in Dallas, Austin, Corpus Christi and Fort Worth covering some event of every President from Lyndon Johnson to Ronald Reagan.

Born in Fort Worth, he grew up in Corpus Christi, graduating from Ray High School in 1966, from the University of Texas at Austin in 1970 with B.A. in Economics and from Ohio State University in 1974 with an M.A. in Journalism.

The Smith family has lived in Parker County since 1905. Tracey heard stories from his father about taking watermelons into Weatherford on a wagon, about getting water from a hand pump, milking cows every day. His mother’s family owned a cafe on the square in Granbury. They were more privileged than the Smiths having running water, electricity and indoor plumbing. One year Smith’s grandfather Sam Hambright was a Hood County deputy sheriff and the family lived in the jail!

All the men of both families served in World War II and Tracey grew up with a keen sense of patriotism and doing right by his friends and neighbors.

As a news reporter he covered stories about the rich and the poor, the successful and the downtrodden, the winners and the losers. He won an award for outstanding education reporting in his first job with the Richardson Daily News and won an award for outstanding spot news coverage with KZTV in Corpus Christi. When he went into private business in real estate in 1984, he was ambitious but vowed to treat people as he would want to be treated if he were in the same situation.

Smith has always been active in churches, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School and serving on administrative boards. His civic life has included being active in the Greater Fort Worth World Affairs Council and serving on the Tarrant County Historical Commission. He is a baseball fanatic, an avid handball player, canoeist and gardener.

He was widowed in 2003 with two grown step-daughters and was re-married (Aug. 16, 2008) to Mary Clark (also with two grown children).

Smith has served the Democratic Party as a precinct chairman, 1988 national delegate for Al Gore and has attended numerous state conventions.

He has lived in Fort Worth continuously since 1978.
