Info | McMAHON, John A., (nephew of Clement Laird Vallandigham), a Representative from Ohio; born in Frederick County, Md., February 19, 1833; pursued academic studies; graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Cincinnati, in 1849; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1854 and commenced practice in Dayton, Ohio; delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1872 and 1904; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth, Forty-fifth, and Forty-sixth Congresses (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1881); one of the managers appointed by the House of Representatives in 1876 to conduct the impeachment proceedings against William W. Belknap, Secretary of War; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1880 to the Forty-seventh Congress; resumed the practice of his profession in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio; served as president of the Ohio State Bar Association in 1886; unsuccessful candidate for election to the United States Senate in 1889; died in Dayton, Ohio, March 8, 1923; interment in Woodland Cemetery.
