Info | MITCHELL, Robert, a Representative from Ohio; born in Westmoreland County, Pa., in 1778; attended the common schools; studied medicine; moved to Ohio in 1807 and practiced in Zanesville; clerk to the commissioners of Muskingum County in 1811 and 1812; county collector in 1812 and 1813; served in the War of 1812 as a member of Capt. John De Vault’s company; member of the State house of representatives in 1815 and 1816; judge of the court of common pleas in 1818; brigadier general of the State militia in 1822; elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-third Congress (March 4, 1833-March 3, 1835); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1834 to the Twenty-fourth Congress; resumed the practice of medicine in Zanesville, Ohio, where he died November 13, 1848; interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
