Their first child, Caroline Virginia, was born in October, 1996. They live in west Harris County and are active members of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church.
He was sworn in as District 7's third Congressman on January 3, 2001, after serving 14 years in the Texas House of Representatives. John was elected to the Texas House in 1986 at the age of 29 from a seven-candidate field in a Republican primary and run-off. John was selected by his Republican colleagues as the House Republican Whip and was responsible for solidifying support among his colleagues for Governor George W.
