Info | Anthony "Art" Arton is University of Central Missouri's Student Governor. He graduates this December and has decided to run for State Representative in the 121st district.
Art was born in Kansas City and moved to Warrensburg in 1993. Art graduated from Warrensburg in 2002 and took a year off and earned his EMT and Firefighter License. He then enrolled at UCM where he majored in Political Science. Art has served UCM in a variety of roles. He is the current student representative to the Board of Governors. Past Homecoming King and past President of the College Republicans. He also served as Rep. Pearce's legislative intern in Jefferson City in 2003. Although he was active in the Republican Party he decided to switch to the Democratic Party because the issues that are most important to him are education, health care, and the environment.
His university and community involvement make him an excellent candidate.
-Board of Governors for UCM (2006-Present)
-Parks and Recreation Board for Warrensburg (2005-2007)
-Member Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce
The issues that are important to him are:
1. Education
Currently Missouri ranks 49th in higher education funding. In 2000 Missouri funded 67% of UCM's budget now the state only funds 46% and the students pay 54%
He is also against using taxpayer money for private vouchers. Art is a product of public education and is a strong supporter of Missouri schools. When elected Art will return education as the #1 funding priority in the state.
2. Health Care
Art understands what its like to live without health insurance. With limited financial aid many students choose not to get insurance because of the high cost. Unfortunately, many low income Americans have to make the choice of health insurance and putting food on the table. Art will fight for more funding for Child Health Insurance Plans (CHIPs) and seek to expand coverage for other low income and middle class families.
3. Environment
Art believes that it is time for us to start being good stewards of the environment. He would like to see the state of Missouri take a more active role in regulating pollution and promoting renewable energy such as solar and wind energy.
