Info | Walter (Walt) F. Brown, a career activist and advocate for social
justice, has a long and distinguished career in politics, the military,
and the legal field. Born in 1926, Walt earned a BA and Juris Doctor
from USC, and studied Constitutional Law at Havard University. He
also earned an MA in Government from Boston University, and an
MLS from the University of Oregon. Walt was a Phi Beta Kappa
and Rhodes Scholar nominee in 1948. Walt served in the US Navy
from 1944-1970 and was Commander in the JAG Corps. A resident
of Oregon, Walt acted as Mallheur City Legal Counsel and served
as Deputy District Attorney from 1989-1991. From 1975-1987, Walt
also served in the Oregon State Senate.
While Walt has held various white-collar positions, including factulty
at Northwestern Law School, he is no stranger to the working class,
having been emplyed as an aircraft riviter, a mailman, construction
laborer, and warehouseman. Walt joined the Socialist Party USA in
1948 and founded the Socialist Party of Oregon in 1992. As a
Congressional Candidate in 1998, Walt recieved over 10,000 votes.
He ran also ran in 2000 & 2002 with similar results. Walt serves
as legal counsel for the Socialist Party USA.
1. Full Living Wage Employment -
(a.) Creating public works to achieve full employment.
(b.)Repealing so-called "right-to-work laws," so that workers
will be guaranteed the right to organize, bargain, and strike.
(c.) Raising the minimum wage to $10.00 an hour.
(d.) Gauranteeing 6 weeks of paid vacation time to all full time, part time,
public and private sector workers.
2. Universal Socialized Medicine - Single Payer Health Care, modeled
after the one that exist in Canada. The eventual creation of a National
Health Service.
3. Progressive taxation on the wealthy, so they will finally pay their fair
share.
4. Civil Liberties & Civil Rights for All People
(a.) An end to all discrimination based on race, relgion, sexual orientation,
gender,or disability.
(b.) Repeal the USA Patriots Act and Homeland Security Act.
(c.) Abolish the Death Peath Penalty
(d.) Guarantee full and absolute freedom of speech and the right to
privacy.
(e.) Protecting a woman's reproductive rights, including access to abortion.
( f.) Recognize same sex marriage.
5. Protect the environment and focus on public transportation
6. Fair, NOT "free" trade.
(a.) Withdraw from NAFTA.
(b.).Trade only with democratic nations with pro labor, pro environment,
and democratic institutions.
7. Electoral Democracy
(a.) We need Proportional Representation
(b.) We need free party compeition, meaning allowing more minor
parties to be on the ballot.
(c.) We need to guarantee free air time to all candidates and political
parties.
(d.) We need to have public funding for all elections and parties, in
order to get private money out of politics.
8. Universal childcare
9.Public education from K to post graduate level available.
(a.) Increase fudning to preserve public schools.
(b.) Reject private school vouchers.
10. Peaceful Foreign Policy
(a.) Cut military spending by 50% in order to fund public services.
(b.) Abolish the FBI, the CIA, and all other covert agencies.
(c.) End all arm sells around the world.
(d.) End the embargo against the people of Cuba.
(e.) Support a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian Crises, whereby
an independent democratic Palestinian Homeland is established living side
by side with the full recognition of Israel's right to peacefully exist - the Two
State Solution.
(f.) Support for the UN instead of unilateral action from the US.
