InfoIn 1999, Nandor was elected to Parliament, 5th on the Green Party list and the candidate for Auckland Central. "It was an incredible time," he remembers.

People outside the so-called mainstream now have a politician they can say 'hi' to on the street. Nandor is someone who represents their voice in Parliament, someone who asks the questions they want asked, someone who makes sense of the statement that 'everything you do is political'.

Today he is Spokesperson for Drug Law Reform (including Alcohol), Forestry (Assoc), Information Technology, Justice, Tertiary Education, Treaty Issues, Urban Affairs, Youth Affairs. He is also a Member of the Justice & Electoral Select Committee. He stepped down as coordinator for the Wild Greens after his election.

Despite his two terms of experience in the parliamentary process, he hasn't lost sight of a basic conviction - that Parliament is an artificial world which is a facilitator for change, rather than an end in itself.

In contrast, the 'real world' includes his new whanau, his partner Sharney Murphy and young daughter, and he deeply regrets being separated from them during the week. "I dread missing Pirimaia growing up," he says quietly.

'Staying real' in the artificial world of parliamentary politics is, for Nandor, a question of remaining true to the values which he brought into Parliament.

"Parliament creates spaces for other people to do things; we're no more important than that." He considers briefly. "Right now, though, here is the right place for me to be."

And this place needs his unique perspective for some time yet.
