Vice Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, 1973;
Retired from the Army to serve as the White House Chief of Staff, 1973-1974;
Recalled to active duty as Commander in Chief, U.S. European Command and Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, 1974-1979;
Retired from the Army June 30, 1979;
President and chief operating officer of United Technologies, 1979-1981;
Commissioned Secretary of State in President Reagan's Cabinet on January 22, 1981, and entered upon his duties the same day and served until July 5, 1982
