Info | Alvin Brooks serves as Mayor Pro Tem of Kansas City. He was elected to the City Council in 1999 and re-elected in 2003. Alvin serves as chairman of the Council's Public Safety Committee, and vice chair of the Council's Finance and Aviation Committees.
Beginning his career as a KCMO Police officer, Alvin later organized the City's original Human Relations Department, becoming the first African-American department head. He was later promoted to Assistant City Manager.
Following his professional career in city government, Alvin founded the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime, a citizen-based community organization focused on fighting crime in Kansas City. In 1990, the President of the United States came to Kansas City to designate Alvin as one of America's "Thousand Points of Light."
Alvin Brooks has received dozens of awards and other recognition for his contributions to our metropolitan area, including:
* Honorary Doctorate of Law from Park University
* Honorary Doctorate of Law from Rockhurst University
* Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of Central Missouri
* Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Western Baptist Seminary
Alvin has also served, or is currently serving on numerous prestigious boards and commissions, including his current membership on the Missouri Supreme Court Advisory Committee.
