InfoWhen Sam Yoon filed for an At-Large seat on the Boston City Council, he made history as the first Asian American ever to run for elected office in Boston. After his election in November 2005 and first run for office, Sam is now Boston's first Asian American member of the city council. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Sam came to this country with his parents when he was only ten months old. At ten years old, he became a naturalized U. S. citizen.

Sam attended Princeton University, where he earned a teaching license along with a bachelor's degree in philosophy. He subsequently taught in two of New Jersey's most troubled public school systems. Sam graduated with a Masters degree in public policy from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government where he focused on community economic development and affordable housing. Since then, Sam has worked for numerous community-based non-profits. Most recently, Sam was Development Director for Asian Community Development Corporation (ACDC) working to create affordable housing and economic development in Boston's Chinatown. Sam has also worked for Boston Aging Concerns, an organization focused on housing for families where grandparents are the primary care givers as well as The Community Builders, the nation's largest non-profit developer of affordable housing. Sam has also worked for Abt Associates, a leading public policy research firm.

Sam has been involved in a number of volunteer activities including The New Majority, a year-old coalition of Blacks, Latinos, and Asians who have joined together to advance a common agenda for communities of color in Boston, of which Sam was a founding member and core steering committee member.
