Info | After working to build a grass-roots coalition, Patrick Dowd was elected to the Pittsburgh Board of Education in 2003. In the Primary election of that year he defeated the incumbent Board President in both the Democratic and Republican Party primaries. He went on to win the General Election in November. Patrick took office on December 1, 2003. He currently serves as the chairperson of the Board's Education Committee which is responsible for all legislative items having to do with the academic work of the district. In 2004, Pittsburgh Magazine and the Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Program named Patrick one of the region's "40 Under 40," a group of younger individuals working to improve the quality of life in Western Pennsylvania.
Patrick has long been interested in education. He grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and graduated with a B.A. in History from the University of Missouri. He came to Pittsburgh in 1991 to begin his graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1999, Patrick earned a doctorate from the Department of History at the University of Pittsburgh. He was particularly interested in the history of education and education systems. He has served on the Highland Park Community Plan's Education Task Force and was an invited participant in the Institute for Community Leadership in Education, a nine-month seminar series sponsored by the Education Policy and Leadership Center. Patrick teaches Modern World History, Advanced Placement European History and Economics at the Ellis School.
Patrick and his wife Leslie have five children, three of whom attend Pittsburgh Public Schools, as will their two pre-school age children. Several years ago they purchased their current home in Highland Park. It was a run-down house which they are renovating themselves.
Patrick and his family attend East Liberty Presbyterian Church. He is a member of the Highland Park Community Club. Patrick believes deeply that high quality education will attract more people to our city and will make it a better place to live and raise a family.
