Info | Geno Zamora learned from his father a deep respect and appreciation for the law, and a need to serve the community –- defending those who are powerless against the powerful. From his Catholic education at St. Michael's High School and Georgetown University to his public grade school and law school education, Geno learned to honor New Mexico values, respect and celebrate diverse backgrounds.
With extensive legal and public service experience, Geno Zamora has the necessary vision and background to be New Mexico’s next Attorney General. Geno most recently served as Chief Legal Counsel to Governor Bill Richardson for the first two and a half years of his administration, working with the Governor on key public safety issues and a comprehensive anti-crime package during four successful legislative sessions. He represented the state before the New Mexico Supreme Court, and was the Governor’s chief liaison to the Attorney General and the state’s judiciary.
Geno, a New Mexico native, was a member of key working groups -- the Supreme Court Criminal Justice Task Force, the Governor’s Task Force on Equity in the Judiciary and the Governor’s Crime Team—that directly led to tougher laws on DWI, domestic abuse, and sex crimes as well as important judicial reforms to keep New Mexico and its citizens safe.
Geno previously served as Assistant Attorney General to Tom Udall, where he successfully prosecuted illegal developers, cracked down on fraudulent gasoline stations, and fought to keep criminals in jail.
His past law practice includes serving as associate counsel to New Mexico Highlands University, as well as attorney for the City of Santa Fe, City of Hobbs, and Albuquerque Public Schools. Geno also was Chief Analyst for the New Mexico House of Representatives’ Leadership Office during the 2001 legislative sessions.
Geno’s significant legal qualifications include serving as a past president of the 1st Judicial District Bar Association, a past Bar Commissioner for the New Mexico State Bar, and as a current Board Member of the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association.
Geno attended E.J. Martinez Elementary and St. Michael’s High School in Santa Fe, and he graduated from the Georgetown University School of Business and the University of Arizona law school. He has also served on the boards of the New Mexico Sports Authority and the New Mexico Lottery Authority.
Geno and his wife Sheila live in Santa Fe. He is currently of counsel for the law offices of Gallagher & Kennedy.
