Info | Joanne Crofford has lived and worked in urban, rural and northern Saskatchewan. She graduated from the University of Regina, majoring in Social Studies and Communications. Ms. Crofford’s 12 years of work in La Ronge included Assistant Director of Personnel for the Department of Northern Sask, representative to the provincial Environmental Impact Secretariat, and Business Manager of the Kikinahk Indian and Métis Friendship Centre. On her return to Regina, Joanne was Program Coordinator at Rainbow Youth Centre and Research Coordinator for the University of Regina, Faculty of Social Work.
First elected in October 1991 as MLA for Regina Lake Centre, and subsequently for Regina Centre and Regina Rosemont, due to boundary changes. Since her appointment to cabinet in February 1995, Joanne has served as Minister Responsible for SPMC, Status of Women, Sask Liquor and Gaming Authority, Indian and Métis Affairs Secretariat, Sask Communications Network, Wascana Centre Authority, Conexus Arts Centre, PSC, Sask Gaming Corp., and Disability Issues, as well as Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training; Labour; Culture, Youth and Recreation; Dept of Community Resources and Employment.
Joanne has served as a member of the Cabinet Committees on Treasury Board and Chair of the Collective Bargaining Committee as well as the Legislative Committees on Public Accounts, the Environment, and Human Services. In February 2006, Ms. Crofford announced her intention to step down in the next election and return to private life. She is currently a member of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts.
Joanne is active in community cultural, and multi-cultural organizations and has an ongoing commitment to social justice and community-based economic development.
Joanne and her husband Vic enjoy canoeing, playing music, rock picking, and Saskatchewan grid road adventures. Often joined by Granddaughter Serena Thompson who is in French immersion, singing, and volleyball.
