InfoJohn T. Nilson was born in Saskatoon and raised in Western Canada. John obtained his education at Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, Washington; University of Oslo, Norway; St. Olaf College in Minnesota; and University of British Columbia Law School. He was admitted to the Bar in British Columbia in 1978 and in Saskatchewan in 1979.

John practiced law and mediation with MacPherson, Leslie & Tyerman from 1978 until he was elected as MLA for the Regina Lakeview constituency for the New Democratic Party in June 1995. John was appointed to cabinet as Minister of Justice and Attorney General in November 1995. He was named as Minister of Crown Investments Corporation in 1999, and Minister of Health in 2001. In 2002 he took on additional duties as Minister Responsible for Seniors.

In 2006, John was appointed Minister of Environment, and Minister Responsible for SaskPower and Office of Energy Conservation. John is the chairperson of the Cabinet Committee for Legislative Instruments and a member of the Treasury Board and the Crown Investments Corporation. John is responsible for the Sask Watershed Authority, Water Appeal Board, and Sask Centre of the Arts.

John was Consul of Norway for Saskatchewan from 1991 to 1995, and Acting Consul of Denmark for Saskatchewan from July 1994 to 1995. John is an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, the Scandinavian Club of Regina, and many community organizations.

John is a member of the Law Society of Sask, Canadian Bar Association, America Bar Association, and Mediation Saskatchewan.

He and his wife Linda have two daughters: Ingrid and Solveig. They live in Regina Lakeview, near the legislature, and farm north of Parkbeg.
