| Info | Born, raised, and educated in northern Saskatchewan, Buckley Belanger began his career as a journalist in Regina with the Aboriginal publication New Breed. He later returned to his hometown of Ile-a-la-Crosse to become the editor of the local paper. Buckley subsequently joined Missinipi Broadcasting Corporation in La Ronge where he worked as a programmer, producer, and administrator. During this time, Buckley promoted the importance of radio and television for northern residents, and in 1986 assisted 12 communities in establishing their own radio and television studios. In 1987, he established his own consulting company to continue this community communication work.
Buckley Belanger entered politics in 1988 and was elected Mayor of Ile-a-la-Crosse. He served three terms as mayor, being re-elected in 1991 and 1994. With a strong focus on economic development, community rehabilitation, and local infrastructure, Ile-a-la-Crosse became one of the showcase communities of northern Saskatchewan.
In 1995, Buckley entered provincial politics and was elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature, representing the riding of Athabasca. He was re-elected in the general elections in 1999. Buckley was appointed to cabinet on September 30, 1999 as Minister of Environment and Resource Management. He was appointed as Associate Minister for Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs.
Mr. Belanger was reappointed Minister of Environment and Resource Management on Feb 8, 2001. On October 12, he was appointed the additional portfolio of Northern Affairs. On March 27, 2002 he was appointed Minister of Sask Water and Northern Affairs and then on June 24, 2002 he was reappointed Minister of Environment and Northern Affairs.
Buckley was re-elected as the MLA for Athabasca on November 5, 2003 for a third term. On November 21, 2003, Mr. Belanger was appointed Minister of Northern Affairs. On February 3, 2006, Mr. Belanger was appointed Minister of Community Resources and Minister Responsible for Disability Issues.
Minister Belanger and his wife Beckie have three daughters: Michelle, Kellie, and Taylor.
