Info | John David Waihee III was the fourth Governor of Hawai'i, the first Governor of any state to be of Hawai'ian Ancestry [direct descendant of pre-Kamehameha era]. Waihee is a native of rural Honoka'a on the Big Island of Hawai'i.
He received his Bachelor of Art degrees in history and business from Andrews University in Michigan. He obtained his law degree from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa William Richardson School of Law in 1976.
Like most Hawai'ian politicians in office today, Waihee's career began with his election to the Hawai'i State Constitutional Convention of 1978.
In 1980 he was elected to the Hawai'i House of Representatives, and in 1982 he was elected Lt. Governor of Hawai'i, serving under Governor George R. Ariyoshi. He became Hawai'i's fourth elected governor in 1988. He occupied Washington Place until 1996.
Waihee has recently been an attorney and lobbyist partner in private practice for the Washington, DC based firm, Verner Liipfert Bernhard McPherson and Hand. In 2002, Waihee partnered with former state land use commissioner Renton Nip to establish the law firm Waihee and Nip.
