Info | Ben was born on March 30, 1975 in Peoria, Illinois. In 1977 he and his mother moved back to her family home in Prince George's County, where he has lived for the majority of his 31 years.
Ben was raised by his mother, Elizabeth Barnes, who as a single parent often worked two jobs to make ends meet. It was as a child that he gained an appreciation for the struggles of working class people, like his mother, and the commitment of the Democratic Party to helping the working class get ahead.
Ben graduated from Eleanor Roosevelt High School in 1993. He attended The University of North Carolina Greensboro where he graduated with a double major in Economics and Political Science. He was the first person in his family to go to college.
After graduating, Ben returned to Prince George's County and began working at People for the American Way, a progressive advocacy organization. There, Ben was able to work on many of the progressive issues of the day - including civil rights issues and first amendment protections.
Back home in Prince George's County Ben was busy re-vitalizing the Young Democrats. Through that organization Ben won a spot on the Prince George's County Democratic Central Committee where he served for three years. In 2002 Ben was elected a vice-chair of that Committee.
After leaving People for the American Way, Ben gained employment with the Senate President of Maryland, Mike Miller. He worked there for five years and was promoted to the position of Deputy Legislative Director. Ben was able to work on several important initiatives in that office, including reasonable gun control legislation, increasing the minimum wage in Maryland, and legislation that benefits the working class.
During his tenure with President Miller, Ben worked his way through law school attending the University of Baltimore at night.
Ben is an attorney in Laurel, Maryland
Ben currently lives in College Park. He had been active on the College Park Education Advisory Committee and was one of the lead organizers of the College Park Homes Fair - which sought to encourage families, not investors, to buy in our community. He practices law in downtown Laurel at the law firm of Donna L. Crary, P.A. During his time in Laurel, Ben represented, pro-bono, the community in its opposition to the proposed strip club at Contee Road.
