Duane Burghard was born in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Ill., and now lives in Columbia, Mo.
A Naval ROTC cadet at the University of Missouri-Columbia, he received a bachelor's degree there in 1987 and then spent four years on active duty as a U.S. Naval administrative officer specializing in computer software applications.
Burghard returned to Columbia in 1991 to start The MacXprts Network, an Apple computer service provider. He retains an ownership stake in the company but resigned as chief executive officer in March — replaced by his wife Mara — to focus on the Congressional campaign.
Burghard first sought the U.S. House seat in 1992 as an independent, finishing fourth in a four-candidate race.
He and his wife have two children.
