Marxism, History of Philosophy, Social Philosophy
B.A., Manhattan; M.A., Yale University; Ph.D., Boston University
The essence of development (the perfectibility of humanity and nature) is at the core of my interests. One focus of this is ethics: the issue of progressing and non-relativist moralities. Another is that of social policy: the proper criterion of a progressive policy and evaluations of specific social policies. A third is the matter of numan nature, its historicity and progress. I am also interested in the relations of these to what is Ultimately Real. Thus I teach and write about virtue ethics, progress and growth, abortion, and fascism. I am also interested in the history of philosophy, especially the dialectical tradition from Plato to Marx and beyond.
