InfoSylvia Watson, recently described in the Globe and Mail as “one of Toronto council's strongest members” (June 27, 2006), has gained a solid reputation for providing a strong voice for Parkdale-High Park and as an individual who gets things done for local residents.

Watson was elected to city council in 2003 with a landslide majority, focusing on building a strong community that people want for their children. She quickly followed through with action, and after her first year on council she was given an “A” grade by Now magazine.

Watson has distinguished herself for providing real results for the community, whether it is shutting down bars where criminal activity threatened community safety, securing $1.2 million for a new Wabash/Sorauren Community Centre, getting approval for the development of a $23-million Western Beaches waterfront facility that will host the 2006 International Dragon Boat Championships this summer, initiating the rehabilitation of a derelict and dangerous building in the heart of Parkdale (now to be used for housing), even getting a traffic control signal at the Jameson Avenue-Queen Street-Lansdowne Avenue intersection – after 30 years of unsuccessful attempts by previous councilors.

For securing funding for the Wabash/Sorauren Community Centre, the Globe and Mail noted that: "To the envy of her colleagues…Sylvia Watson…has earned a reputation for ferreting out funds for projects in her community… “ (March 11, 2005).

Prior to her election to City Hall, Watson served as a solicitor for the City of Toronto for 11 years. She was also active in the community, taking on the role as Director of the Parkdale Pilot Project, a unique program that continues to improve affordable housing in Parkdale.

An immigrant from Austria, Watson grew up in Toronto. She lives in Parkdale-High Park with her spouse and two sons, ages 18 and 19.
