Biography in Campaign Literature

James Brodbelt Harris has challenged Rep. Bob Ney (R-Heath) for the Republican primary nomination for Ohio's 18th Congressional district competing in the primary election to be held on May 2, 2006. Harris is twice related to and a descendant of former Ohio Governor Andrew Lintner Harris in a collateral branch of the Harris family. A Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder and Republican registered to vote in Muskingum County near the eastern edge of metropolitan Columbus, Harris submitted three times as many nominating petition signatures as is required under Ohio law starting on Lincoln's birthday.
James Brodbelt Harris, CFA, a native and resident of central Ohio, operates an investment firm, Harris Investment and Property, and analyzes stocks and property investments. A National Merit Scholarship finalist and co-representative of the U.S. on the first year of the Reagan-Gorbachev high school exchanges, Harris graduated one year early from Dartmouth College (AB 1991) and worked for Citibank and other firms before pursuing his business based in central Ohio. A member of the CFA institute, Harris was a co-author of the Corporate Governance Handbook (NYSSA, 2003) which advocates greater shareholder rights, accounting honesty and corporate ethics. Harris also advocates greater private property rights, controlled government spending, reduced pork, and lower average tax burdens. In 1989, Harris served local Congressman John R. Kasich as a Congressional Intern at the Capitol building in Washington D.C. and has been a grass roots Republican volunteer serving as a Republican precinct judge, petition circulator, member of Young Republican clubs, and alumni leader active in reforming university governance.

An eighth generation Ohioan born in central Ohio three houses away from the National Road, Harris participates in his family's "Ohio Century Farm" located in the same township named by his direct ancestor, Judge Robert Lytle, a veteran of the American revolution. Another direct ancestor, John McCain, also served in the Revolution and farmed land where downtown Cincinnati is now located. Harris's father was President of the local county Farm Bureau and Ohio's Director of USDA's ASCS (now Farm Service Agency) and a veteran of WWII. Two hundred years ago, the pioneer Harris family journeyed down the Ohio River by flatboat and has farmed in the state ever since. The Harris family's most accomplished member was the "Farmer Statesman", Andrew L. Harris, who commanded a brigade on Cemetery Hill at Gettysburg and who was the last Civil War General to serve as a Governor in the U.S. Harris was McKinley's running mate, and a legislator, Judge, and Commissioner on the "trust busting" Industrial Commission, who battled against saloon corruption and who banned corporate donations in the Ohio.

Harris wants to fight for economic growth in Ohio, saying, "I'm a pro-growth Reagan Republican. I support lower taxes including lower gas taxes and lower tariff taxes. I'll vote to reduce pork and earmarks and to restrain spending. I support international trade, international cultural and diplomatic alliances, and the international defense against global terrorism, and would vote for the USA Patriot Act and extensions. I ask for the loyalty of true Republicans and native Ohioans to restore our state's honor, respect, and the principles of the party of Lincoln."

"Ohioans who know our great history will reject stagnation and fear, and instead vote for courage and hope as we always have. Remember the Wright Brothers, John Glenn and Neil Armstrong! - Ohioans were first to the heavens and first to the moon. I call on the Republican voters of Ohio's 18th District to replace the incumbent with a better, more uplifting nominee for the May primary - for the sake of the Republican party in the U.S., but more importantly, for the sake of the great state of Ohio."
