Info | For nearly thirty years I have called the City of Syracuse my home. I have a strong passion and commitment to the growth and progress of our city and its residents. As a husband and father of two beautiful children, I place a high priority on families, youth, and education as the foundations for a positive future for our great city.
The future of Syracuse relies upon a strong local economy and a strong work force. We need to help local businesses continue to grow, creating more jobs and job training. Too many of our neighborhoods have been neglected, too many major capital projects are announced with great fanfare and then nothing happens, and too many young people either fail to graduate from high school or fail to receive any training in a marketable skill. I want to see better lives for all the citizens of this city. In addition to my construction business, I am an Adjunct Professor and Educational Consultant. From 1980 to the present I have served in the following professional titles:
Adjunct Professor: Cazenovia College, Manlius Pebble Hill School
Regional Outreach Coordinator: NYS Consumer Protection Board
Special Program Director: Syracuse City School District
Commissioner: Parks, Recreation and Youth Programs, Syracuse NY
Senior Health Educator: Family Planning Services, SUNY Upstate Medical Center
Senior Youth Division Aide: NYS Division for Youth
Young People - A Top Priority
Having conducted workshops in over 200 High Schools, Middle Schools and Elementary Schools in Onondaga County and throughout New York State, I understand the problems young people are facing and offer constructive solutions. I have lectured and developed programming for young people in the areas of Self Esteem Education, Teen Pregnancy, Cultural Diversity and Substance Abuse issues. I have also been honored to serve as the keynote speaker for graduation commencement ceremonies at many area High Schools, such as Fowler, Fayetteville-Manlius, Canastota, DeRuyter and Fabius-Pompey, as well as at BOCES Alternative School, Manlius Pebble Hill and Salem Hyde Elementary School. As a motivational speaker I encourage audiences and workshop participants to reach their fullest potential and self worth. My educational approach is holistic in nature with a long-term goal to unify students, teachers, parents and the educational community.
Teachers and Inclusion
The people who interact with students on a daily basis are on the front lines and need the tools to make a positive impact, so I have also conducted teacher in-services in the areas of Self Respect and Cultural Diversity. In addition, I am a strong advocate for the Learning Disabled and have given workshops in learning disabilities throughout Upstate New York.
Community Involvement
Co-Chairman of the Resource Review Committee for Family Planning Service
Chairman of the Minority Initiative of the American Diabetes Association
Committee member of BACA (Blacks Against Chemical Abuse)
Committee member of Year Round Syracuse
Chairman of the Nominating Committee of Central Baptist Church
Treasurer of Central Baptist Church
Board of Regents, LeMoyne College
Education Foundation Committee, Syracuse City School District
Special Deputy, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department
International Involvement
In March of 1996, as part of the Mideast peace process, I spent one month on behalf of our local government consulting with Israeli, Italian, German, and Arab government officials in the city of Jerusalem, territory of Gaza, and the West Bank to establish cultural and educational programming. As a result of this consultancy, I earned the City of Syracuse approximately $20,ooo paid by the World Bank that went into the general fund.
Media Involvement
If you are going to engage the community, the media is an excellent method. I have been interviewed by newspaper reporters and appeared on many radio and television programs throughout my career to promote problem-solving initiatives including, but not limited to:
Central New York News with Joe Galuski
The Jim Reith Show
Jean Dougherty’s TV show dealing with issues of violence and “No put-downs”
The Carrie Lazarus TV Show “P.M. Magazine”
Court TV
