PATTY WEISS DECIDES TO LEAVE KVOA-TV
AFTER THIRTY YEARS WITH STATION

Tucson, AZ—Eyewitness News 4 Anchor Patty Weiss has decided to leave KVOA-TV after a distinguished, thirty-year career with the station. Despite KVOA’s continued efforts to retain Ms. Weiss in a senior Anchor/Reporter role, she has determined that she wants to move on and will be ending her career with the station at the end of May. Both KVOA and Ms. Weiss emphasize that their parting is amicable.

“Patty has made significant contributions to KVOA over the years,” stated Gary Nielsen, President & General Manager of KVOA-TV. He added, “I believe it is fair to say that KVOA is where it is today in no small part due to her efforts. We will miss Patty on both a professional and personal level. We wish her the very best.”

“Working thirty years in the same job is a feat in itself, but thirty years as the main news anchor at a top-rated station is a rare accomplishment,” said News Director Lisa Contreras. She continued, “But, then again, Patty Weiss is a rare individual.”

In making her announcement, Ms. Weiss said, “Even though the station offered me the opportunity to stay, I thought it was time to try something new. I feel like the most blessed person in Tucson for having been given the privilege of doing this wonderful job and coming into viewers’ homes every night.” She went on to say, “I would like to thank viewers for giving me the honor of their trust. I am so happy to have been a part of their lives and to have served the community I love so much. Very few people in my profession have the opportunity to stay at one station for three decades, to serve one community for three decades. I am truly lucky.”

Ms. Weiss has the distinction of being the first woman to anchor an evening newscast at a commercial television station in Arizona. She joined KVOA in 1975 and has served as one of the station’s main news anchors ever since.

Ms. Weiss grew up in Tucson and attended Palo Verde High School. After only three years, she graduated cum laude from the University Of Arizona with a degree in Journalism. She began her television career reporting and anchoring for KOLD-TV in Tucson, then moved to the ABC affiliate in San Diego. After two years in Southern California, Ms. Weiss accepted a position at KVOA and returned to her beloved hometown.

Over the years, Ms. Weiss has been honored with numerous awards, including being inducted into the National Academy Of Television Arts & Sciences’ prestigious Silver Circle (Rocky Mountain Emmy Chapter) which recognizes broadcasters for twenty-five years of outstanding service in the same television market. She was also one of a handful of UA graduates who led the charge to save the University Of Arizona Department of Journalism when the administration wanted to eliminate it during the 1990’s. Ms. Weiss has also served on many of the university’s advisory boards, including those for the College of Behavioral Sciences; the Departments of Journalism and Psychology; the Institute For Children, Youth and Families; and UA Presents. She has also been involved with many civic and charitable organizations, serving on the Boards of the Tucson Botanical Gardens, Green Fields Country Day School and the Community Foundation For Southern Arizona. Ms. Weiss also makes regular speaking engagements and is very active in the arts community.

Ms. Weiss and her husband, Dr. Alan Gelenberg, have five grown children.
