InfoAs I am asking for your vote in the next federal election, I will be using my website to have a dialogue with you about my ideas for a Canada where everyone wins. I will also be speaking with you, the citizens of St. Paul, about ensuring your needs and priorities are represented in Ottawa. I believe that ideas are vital and that our current government is short on good ones. But I also believe that, without representatives with a wide range of experience, knowledge, and skills, ideas on their own are not enough.

I am a successful economist, a banker, and a social democrat. What does that mean? It means that I believe I can help build a better Canada, with a stronger economy, with a greener environment, and with a caring social fabric.

I’m new to big P politics. That doesn’t mean that I’m a stranger to making important decisions, setting priorities for resources, and implementing programs that build economies and improve lives. I have done all of these things in my work with RBC Dominion, TD Bank Financial Group, Jardine Fleming and Deutsche Bank. For these major financial organizations, I held positions ranging from chief economist to vice-president, to regional-head Asia Pacific.

I’m also no stranger to bringing people together to find solutions that work for everyone. In my working career, I have had the good fortune to work with hundreds of people as co-workers and clients. From presenting views on the economy and markets that challenged the consensus, to hiring and training people from many different backgrounds, to being responsible for multi-million dollar budgets, I have had a varied work life that I look forward to using in my political life. I also greatly enjoyed coaching minor league hockey and my involvement in charitable work.

I am most proud of the life my wife and I have made for ourselves and our son. I am happily married to Dr. Taeko Summerville, and we are the proud parents of a teenaged son.

As you will learn about me, I believe very strongly in the need for a first class education system for everyone in Canada, particularly in early child development. I recognize that I benefited greatly from the educational opportunities I was provided—from my undergraduate studies at Glendon College in Toronto and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to my Masters at the University of Alberta and my Ph.D. at the University of Tokyo—and I believe that my education has helped me to contribute to the good of Canada.

My work as a chief economist together with my education have allowed me to share my ideas with the world’s leading financial media. I have been frequently quoted on the global economy and have appeared many times on the BBC, CNN, CBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, and NHK. I have also held a regular column in the Nikkei Weekly, and the Financial Post, and have also been published in the New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Asian Wall Street Journal, and The Globe and Mail.

I am excited that this campaign gives me the opportunity to share my ideas with you directly–and I look forward to the opportunity to represent you in Ottawa, where we can work together to implement a vision of Canada where everyone wins.

Because winning is great, when everyone can.
