Info | Susan Gaertner was elected Ramsey County Attorney in November 1994 and was re-elected in 1998 and 2002. Gaertner is only the fourth person to hold the office since 1933 and is the first woman to hold the office.
As County Attorney she spearheaded the creation of the Joint Domestic Abuse Prosecution Unit - a special prosecution unit focusing on domestic assault cases where children are present. She created a special Gangs and Guns Prosecution Unit in response to a growing concern about violent crime committed with guns, often by gang members. She also initiated an innovative Truancy Intervention Program to improve school attendance of students 6 to 17 years old.
Gaertner is recognized and has lectured nationally as an expert on DNA evidence. She was the first prosecutor in Minnesota to present DNA evidence to a jury. She has conducted admissibility hearings on both RFLP and PCR evidence. She is a past co-chair of the DNA subcommittee of the National District Attorneys Association and co-authored the association's "Policy Positions on DNA Evidence." She serves on the Biological Evidence Task Force of the American Bar Association.
Prior to being elected County Attorney, Gaertner was an Assistant Ramsey County Attorney for ten years. As a unit director she created and directed a special prosecution unit in the County Attorney's Office that focused on complex crimes and intense prosecution of career criminals.
Gaertner is a past-president of the Minnesota County Attorneys Association and serves on the Board of Directors of the National District Attorneys Association. She also serves on the Governing Council of the American Bar Association's Criminal Justice Section.
Before coming to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office in 1984, Gaertner was an associate with the William Mauzy law firm and clerked for Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Gerald W. Heaney.
Gaertner received her law degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, graduating cum laude in 1980. As a law student, Gaertner achieved the distinction of being chosen for the Minnesota Law Review and the Order of the Coif. She is a proud member of the Harding High School Hall of Fame. She was honored as a 2003 Attorney of the Year by Minnesota Lawyer.
