| Info | Betty Baxter is a lesbian Canadian volleyball player and coach. She was a member of the national volleyball team for seven years; during that period she was named the University of British Columbia's Athlete of the Year (1974) and was Captain of the Canadian volleyball team for the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.
In 1979, she became the national coach, but was fired in 1982 "amid innuendo about her sexual orientation," despite having been voted Coach of the Year by the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union. She has since been an outspoken advocate for lesbian and gay issues in sport and the community. With many other Canadian sportswomen, Betty founded the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport and the National Coaching School for Women.
Her last international coaching assignment was the KFUM Oslo women's team in Norway in the 1989-90 season. She was a board member and spokesperson for the 1990 Vancouver Gay Games, a gold and silver medalist in gay games in volleyball in 1896, 1990 and competed at the Amsterdam Games last summer.
Baxter currently runs her own business specializing in workplace quality issues, as well as being an activist for women's and lesbian/gay issues. As the first openly lesbian candidate for federal office in 1993, Betty ran under the NDP banner against then Prime Minister Kim Campbell. She has been co-chair of the NDP Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual caucus since 1997.
