Info | PORTER, Charles Howell, a Representative from Virginia; born in Cairo, Greene County, N.Y., June 21, 1833; completed preparatory studies; was graduated from the law university at Albany, N.Y., in 1853; was admitted to the bar in 1854 and commenced practice in Ashland, Greene County, N.Y.; entered the Union Army in 1861 as a member of the First Regiment, New York Mounted Rifles; settled in Norfolk, Va.; served as city attorney for one year; Commonwealth attorney 1863-1867; moved to Richmond, Va., in 1867; member of the constitutional convention of Virginia in 1867 and 1868; upon the readmission of Virginia to representation was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first and Forty-second Congresses and served from January 26, 1870, to March 3, 1873; declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1872; engaged in the practice of law in New York City and Beacon, N.Y.; died in Cairo, N.Y., July 9, 1897; interment in Cairo Cemetery.
