Description |
After moderate republican Kip Bateman narrowly won re-election in 2017 he was hoping his district would have been to been drawn in a more favorable manor for him in 2021. Unfortunately for Bateman the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the redrawing process so he declined to seek re-election.
Democrats fought over who their nominee should be. Somerset Democrat Chair Peg Schaffer wanted a Somerset County resident to get the nomination so democrats would have senatorial courtesy over the county for the first time in over 100 years. Eventually she gave up and backed South Brunswick resident Andrew Zwicker a well liked Assemblyman for the seat.
Demoralized, republicans backed former Congressman Mike Pappas for the seat. Pappas is a skilled campaigner, but it will be nearly impossible for him to over come the democratic trends of a district Joe Biden won with 60% of the vote.
