Ahead of this election, the Jubilee Alliance of 11 political parties was cemented into one single party effective September 7, 2016 (The Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU) chose to list itself separately). In addition, the Democratic Party (DP), the Kenya African National Union (KANU), the Maendeleo Chap Chap Party (MCCP), the Economic Freedom Party (EFP) and the Party of National Unity (PNU) decided to link themselves to the newly formed Jubilee Party.
Together, they took 38 seats in the Senate.
The National Super Alliance (Nasa) created on January 2017, consisted of the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy-Kenya (FORD-KENYA), the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the Wiper Democratic Movement-Kenya (WDM-K), the Amani National Congress (ANC) and the Chama cha Mashinani.
Nasa took 27 seats in the Senate.
