Description |
North Carolina's ascendant Whig Party looked forward to their first victory in a presidential election. In the early fall, they constructed a large log house called Harrison Hall in Raleigh, where the Tippecanoe Club met twice a week to plan the popular participation in the campaign. Smaller log cabins were constructed for the same purpose throughout the State.
A large Whig gathering was held in Raleigh on 10/5/1840. Leading Whigs who addressed the gathering included Edward Stanly, former Gov. John Owen (who presided), Daniel M. Barringer, George E. Badger, Lewis Williams, and Kenneth Raynor.
The Whigs won both state and nation for the first time, both by comfortable (but not landslide) margins.
