Description |
Presidential Electors met in their respective state capitols on 12/7/1836 to cast the electoral votes.
Congress assembled in joint session on 2/8/1837 to count the electoral vote. Martin Van Buren was declared the president-elect. Richard M. Johnson received exactly 50% of the electoral vote for Vice President. There not having been a choice, the U.S. Senate participated in the last contingent election in U.S. history, electing Johnson.
