BBC Constituency Profile:
Set in Scotland's old industrial heartland, the area's efforts to reinvent itself can be seen through the spectacular Falkirk Wheel, a rotating boatlift at the intersection of the Forth and Clyde and Union canals. The economy's previous reliance on manufacturing and engineering has given way to the service sector.
The constituency takes in the town of the same name and stretches west to include Denny, Stenhousemuir and Banknock. In 1298, the first battle of Falkirk delivered a notable English victory against William Wallace's army. The second, in 1746, was the scene of the final Jacobite victory against Britain's Hanoverian government.
Veteran politician Dennis Canavan used to represent this area as a Labour MP. In 2000 he was succeeded by Labour's Eric Joyce, who sat as an independent after being expelled from the party. He is not seeking re-election.
