Description BBC Profile:
Standing for Labour, Dennis Canavan became MP for West Stirlingshire in October 1974. He held the seat until 1997, though the seat was renamed Falkirk West in 1983.

In November 2000 he resigned his seat and in the resulting by-election Labour's Eric Joyce won by 705 votes from the SNP. Joyce was able to extend his majority at the 2001 general election.

In 2005 six wards were added from Falkirk East and Eric Joyce polled just over 50% of the vote.

There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

Set in Scotland's old industrial heartland, the Falkirk seat takes in the town of the same name and stretches west to include Denny, Stenhousemuir and Banknock.

The economy relied heavily on manufacturing, with distilling and engineering the main industries. Most heavy industry has gone, the last distillery closed and more people are now employed in the service sector than in manufacturing.

There is growing tourism, stimulated by the spectacular Falkirk Wheel, at the intersection of the Forth and Clyde and Union canals. Its rotating boatlift (the world's first) has won awards for industrial innovation.

The town was the site of the two battles of Falkirk. The first, in 1298, was a notable English victory against William Wallace's army. The second, in 1746, was the last notable Jacobite victory against the Hanoverian government of Great Britain.
