Description |
BBC Constituency Profile:
Torfaen is bordered by the county of Monmouthshire to the east and the city of Newport to the south. Much of the southern part of the county borough around the Cwmbrân new town conurbation is now urbanised. The north of the county borough is greener and retains extensive areas of countryside, especially on the route to Blaenavon.
It has a high rate of ill health with 36.8% of constituents classified as being long term sick compared to the UK average of 21.8%
Torfaen is historically a safe Labour Party seat. The former Wales and Northern Ireland Secretary Paul Murphy announced in January 2014 that he was standing down at the general election. In 2010, Mr Murphy was elected with 44.8% of votes, with the Conservatives getting 20%, Liberal Democrats 16.6% and Plaid Cymru 5.3%
