Description BBC Profile:
Labour's Leo Abse held this seat for over 20 years until his former agent Paul Murphy's election in 1987. By the 1997 general election Mr Murphy had a majority of 24,536, which had fallen to 14,791 at the last general election, in 2005.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

This Gwent Valleys seat includes the towns of Cwmbran and Pontypool and a number of smaller villages up to Blaenavon in the north. The seat has coterminous boundaries with the Torfaen local authority area.

This is largely former mining territory though the new town of Cwmbran has excellent transport links and a mixed industrial economy.

It was at Blaenavon in 1878 that the Bessemer process of making fine steel was invented. The town's industrial heritage has placed it on the tourist map. It is now a World Heritage Site and also houses the National Coal Museum.

Pontypool grew around a 180-acre park owned by the Hanbury family. It is now largely a dormitory town for commuters and enjoys excellent links to the M4.
