BBC Constituency Profile:
Bordered by the Bristol Channel to the south and dominated by the town of Port Talbot, the seat of Aberavon overlooks Swansea Bay. A surfing hotspot throughout the year, it also boasts one of Wales' longest beaches and a promenade popular with walkers, joggers, cyclists and skaters.
While steel remains a major source of employment, it has the 19th highest proportion of people employed in manufacturing among constituencies in England and Wales, according to ONS 2011 Census figures. However, industrial decline has led to higher than average jobless rates here, with 4.8% unemployed and 42.5% of households having no adults in work.
Labour's first Prime Minister Ramsay Macdonald held the seat between 1922 and 1929 - and it has been Labour ever since. At the 2010 election, Hywel Francis held the seat for Labour with 51.9% of the votes; the Liberal Democrats got 16.3%, Conservatives 14.2% and Plaid Cymru 7.1%.
