BBC Constituency Profile:
The core of the constituency is Lisburn, a busy retail centre, granted city status in 2002. Local attractions include Hillsborough Castle and the Lagan Valley itself, which has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A major issue is a planning row over a proposed John Lewis store at Sprucefield, on the edge of the city.
The estimated population of Lagan Valley in 2013 was about 103,000. According to the last census, it was predominantly Protestant or other non-Catholic Christian (72%). Only 3.5% are unemployed and levels of deprivation are relatively low.
The constituency has consistently returned high-profile MPs to Westminster. The seat was represented by Ulster Unionist leader Jim Molyneaux from 1983 to 1997. Then, the former assistant to Enoch Powell in Down South, Jeffrey Donaldson, won the seat. He subsequently left the Ulster Unionists and in 2005, successfully ran as a DUP candidate for the first time.
