Lagan Valley has consistently returned high-profile MPs to Westminster. The seat was represented by the Ulster Unionist Party leader, Jim Molyneaux, from 1983 to 1997, when the former assistant to Enoch Powell in Down South, Jeffrey Donaldson, won the seat.
Running as a DUP candidate for the first time in 2005 at the general election, Donaldson polled 54.7% of the vote for a majority of 14,117.
At this election, Lagan Valley loses the Glenavy ward to South Antrim, and Dunmurry (the part of Derryaghy north of the boundary with Lagmore) to West Belfast. The core of the constituency is Lisburn, a busy retail centre which was granted city status in 2002. Lisburn has a strong industrial and commercial base. Investment and development has helped maintain Lisburn's strong economic growth: it has the highest rate of inward investment in Northern Ireland outside Belfast. The Lagan Valley seat as a whole has low unemployment relative to the rest of Northern Ireland.
Hillsborough, Moira and Lisburn are dormitory towns for many white-collar workers who commute to Belfast. The M1 motorway cuts through the constituency.
