BBC Constituency Profile:
The easternmost seat in Greater London, Hornchurch and Upminster borders Essex and relies mostly on central London and the City for employment opportunities. The borough of Havering is a largely prosperous area, however, with industry and commerce ranging from manufacturing to retail and financial services. The late, reputed singer Ian Dury, of the Blockheads fame, lived in Upminster as a child.
Exactly 52% of residents here are female, according to data from the ONS 2011 Census for England and Wales, which is the 25th-highest constituency ranking.
The seat was formed in 2010 and is represented by Angela Watkinson for the Conservatives, who also held the predecessor seat of Upminster from 2001. In 2010, Watkinson won with 51.4% of the vote, with Labour on 20.8%, the Liberal Democrats 13.9% and BNP 6.4%.
