Info | Born and educated in London, and living in Dulwich for over 25 years, Jonathan has been closely involved in local issues since he joined the SDP, and for many years he was on the SDP Southwark Area Executive Committee. Jonathan has been Chair of the local Liberal Democrat Party in Dulwich and West Norwood for the last three years.
Before becoming a barrister, Jonathan worked for Courtaulds Limited in the Marketing Department, and also for John Laing as a Public Relations Executive. He now works as a barrister specialising in criminal, European, and Human Rights law. Jonathan is Treasurer of the European Criminal Bar Association, and he writes regularly for the Liberal Democrat Lawyers magazine, The Legal Democrat, and other publications.
Jonathan and his family have lived and worked in the Dulwich area for many years. Ute Mitchell works locally, and their grown up children, Emily and Christian, attended local schools in Dulwich before going to university. Jonathan was born in Purley, Surrey, and went to Whitgift School (Haling Park) and Mill Hill School in North London. At Trinity College Dublin Jonathan gained a BA degree in Economics, English, and Philosophy, and later an MA degree.
Legal Practice: One of the Founder Members of Chambers now at 25 Bedford Row, London WC1R 4HD (www.25bedfordrow.com), Jonathan conducts Leading work in heavy defence criminal trials, but he also conducts some prosecution cases, and Advises in some Civil Cases.
When the European Criminal Bar Association was set up in 1997 Jonathan was one of the Founder Members, and between 2001 and 2003 he helped to set up the International Criminal Bar which will represent parties before the International Criminal Court.
Presentations have been made by Jonathan to a wide variety of Courts and International Institutions. In 2003 he made a Presentation on Justice and Home Affairs to the EU Network of Independent Experts on Fundamental Rights at the European Parliament in Brussels; in February 2004 he made a presentation to Fair Trials Abroad Lawyers in Malaga, Spain; in April 2004 he gave a Presentation on Legal Aid and Access to Justice at the Council of Europe Seminar on the Implementation of Human Rights in The Hague; and in November 2004 he was invited to give evidence to the House of Lords European Union Committee on Procedural Rights in Criminal Proceedings throughout the EU.
Jonathan is a Committee member of the Liberal Democrats Lawyers Association, and in 2003 was the Burma Co-ordinator for the Liberal Democrats Human Rights Group.
As an oarsman, Jonathan rowed for Trinity College Dublin, and he is now a member of Thames Rowing Club. He helped to establish a Boat Club at Dulwich College, and he became the first Chair of the Dulwich College Boat Club Association. He is a member of Herne Hill Baptist Church.
