Description |
BBC Profile:
The seat was created in 1997 from parts of three seats: Boothferry, Glanford and Scunthorpe, and Brigg and Cleethorpes. The newly-created seat had a notional Conservative majority of more than 7,000 based on the 1992 election, setting Labour the target of a swing of just over 7% to win the seat. Ian Cawsey, a former Humberside county councillor, achieved a swing of nearly 14% to win with a majority of more than 6,000.
Small swings in the two subsequent elections reduced the Labour majority and in 2005 Cawsey retained the seat by a margin of 2,894.
At this election, the formerly split Ridge ward in North Lincolnshire will now be completely within Scunthorpe's boundaries. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Brigg and Goole crosses ancient county boundaries to link the North Lincolnshire market town of Brigg and the working-class port of Goole in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
The inland port of Goole (the main inland port in the east of England) is a major employer, exporting much of Yorkshire's produce, and many people work in other businesses along the marshy banks of the Rivers Ouse and Trent. But much of the constituency is rural and agriculture is important here.
A large proportion of employment in the seat is of a manual nature. As well as farming, there are also a number of steelworkers. Brigg is home to bicycle manufacturer Falcon Cycles. [More...]
