Description BBC Profile:
The Conservatives held Taunton for most of the 20th century. But their vote had been in decline since 1979 and in 1997 they lost the seat to the Liberal Democrat Jackie Ballard. This was temporarily reversed in 2001, when Adrian Flook won the seat back for the Tories by 235 votes. In 2005 the Liberal Democrats regained control, Jeremy Browne managing to secure a majority of 573.

The new seat of Taunton Deane is only marginally different from the old Taunton seat. Three wards and two part-wards from West Somerset district are now in Bridgwater and West Somerset. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Taunton Deane is a predominantly rural constituency with one or two large market towns.

Taunton is seen as the gateway to the South West, with both the M5 and mainline rail services passing through the constituency. This accessibility has enabled the town itself to become a major commercial and administrative centre, with both Somerset County Council and Taunton Deane Council's main offices based here. Somerset County Cricket Club is also based in the town.

There is an above average number of people engaged in the retail trade in this constituency, and also in white-collar occupations such as property management and public services.
