Info | Jeremy Browne is the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate
for Taunton constituency. He lives in the centre of Taunton, and is also
closely engaged in local activity in Wellington, Wiveliscombe, Milverton and
the other communities across the area. He takes a special interest in
education and is a Governor at Ladymead Community School in north Taunton.
Born in May 1970, Jeremy is the eldest of four children. The son of a
diplomat, Jeremy was brought up in many different countries, including Iran,
Zimbabwe and Belgium. His father has recently been appointed to be the
British Ambassador in Denmark.
Jeremy attended Nottingham University, where he studied politics. While
there he was also elected president of the students' union and spent a year
as the editor of the award-winning student newspaper.
His first opportunity to work with the Liberal Democrats came when Jeremy
was employed as the parliamentary assistant to deputy leader Alan Beith.
Jeremy also has widespread experience of the world beyond politics,
including working in the private sector for financial-consultancy Dewe
Rogerson. More recently he has worked for Edelman Communications
Worldwide, and is currently employed by ReputationInc, specialising in
corporate reputation management.
Jeremy was the Liberal Democrat candidate for Enfield Southgate in the 1997
General Election, when Michael Portillo famously lost his seat in
parliament. He then went on to work closely with Paddy Ashdown and Charles
Kennedy as the Director of Press and Broadcasting for the national Liberal
Democrats.
Jeremy's political interests include raising standards in Britain's public
services, particularly for schools and hospitals, and reducing crime in
Taunton constituency, with a special focus on anti-social crimes that impact
on the quality-of-life of local residents. Jeremy is also committed to
supporting Somerset's rural communities, including the preservation of
village amenities and improving rural transport.
By taking a very hands-on approach, Jeremy has seen for himself many of the
challenges facing Taunton constituency. He has visited all of the secondary
schools in the area, and many of the primary schools. He was worked on a
farm, visited Musgrove Park hospital, worked in a supermarket and as a
postman, been on patrol with the police, and visited many local Somerset
producers. Jeremy is committed to working closely with every community in
Taunton constituency.
Away from politics, Jeremy enjoys going on adventurous holidays, including visits in the past few years to India, America, Iran and Russia. He is a passionate sports fan - particularly following football, rugby and cricket - and suffers the regular frustrations of being a keen Queens Park Rangers supporter. Jeremy's greatest relaxation is achieved by visiting restaurants with his wife Charlotte and going for long winter walks on Cornish beaches.
