Description BBC Profile:
When this seat was created in 1983, it initially fell to the Conservatives. However, since 1987 it has been in Labour hands, represented at Westminster by Win Griffiths until 2005 and by Madeleine Moon since the 2005 general election.

In 1997 they won 60% of the vote (with a majority of 15,000).

At the 2005 general election the Labour majority for new MP Madeleine Moon was reduced to 6,523.

At this election, Bridgend loses Aberkenfig and Cefn Cribwr to Ogmore, while St Brides Major, Wick and Ewenny go to Vale of Glamorgan. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Situated in South Wales, at the edge of the Vale of Glamorgan, the seat contains two major towns in Porthcawl and Bridgend itself.

Heavy industry has dominated the economy. Though the coalmines and quarries have largely gone, they have been successfully replaced, most notably by Ford, which has a considerable presence in Bridgend.

Porthcawl has a number of retirement homes and is a popular holiday destination. There are also a number of golf courses.

General economic growth has been aided by excellent transport links, in particular the M4.
