Description BBC Profile:
John Taylor, former Ulster Unionist Party security minister in the old Northern Ireland parliament, survived an attempted assassination and kept this seat for 18 years from 1983, despite latterly being strongly opposed by the DUP.

Taylor declined to stand in the 2001 general election and his UUP successor David McNarry was defeated by the DUP's Iris Robinson, whose husband Peter has been MP for neighbouring East Belfast since 1979. At the 2005 general election Robinson increased her majority to 13,049. Robinson stood down in 2010.

At this election, as well as gaining two Down District Council wards, the seat loses a significant lump of its Castlereagh wards (essentially the suburb of Dundonald) to East Belfast. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

The constituency surrounds Strangford Lough and dominates the Ards Peninsula.

The main town is Newtownards, overlooked by the Scrabo Tower.

Only just over an eighth of the population is Catholic. The Presbyterian community is dominant in this part of Northern Ireland.

The workforce is largely engaged in non-manual work with a relatively small manufacturing base.

The main money-earners include farming, fishing and tourism. Attractions include the Castle Espie wetland nature reserve.
