Description Term end due to McGuinness' resignation.

BBC Profile:
Despite the nationalist majority in Mid Ulster, the seat was held by unionists for most of its history. William McCrea of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) gained the seat in 1983 and held it until 1997 when the nationalist vote, increased by boundary changes for that election, swung behind the high-profile figure of Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness.

McGuinness quickly built up his electoral base, extending his majority in 2001 and 2005.

There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

This rural constituency lies between the Sperrin Mountains in the west and Lough Neagh in the east. It covers part of Dungannon and all of Cookstown and Magherafelt district councils. Its key towns are Cookstown, Magherafelt and Coalisland. However, the vast majority of the electorate is found in numerous villages.

The local economy is largely agricultural. Brick-making takes place near Coalisland and there are several sand and gravel quarries.

Tourism centres on Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles. It is particularly marketed as a venue for angling trips.
